ABOUT CHANDLER

Violinist Chandler Yu has established herself as a multifaceted artist through her work with the intersectional and idiosyncratic. Classically trained, she has given solo recitals in Austria and throughout the US, and her performances in the past decade with festivals and orchestra tours have taken her around the world.

Starting in 2011, Chandler has been invited to participate in the Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Sarasota Music Festival, and New York Orchestra String Seminar orchestra program. Since then she has gone on to perform in the Colburn Orchestra and New World Symphony in orchestra tours to Ireland, the UK, and Puerto Rico. With a deep passion for chamber music, she has played for the Ebéne Quartet at the Fontainebleau Festival and pedagogues such as Michael Vaiman and Jodi Levitz during her time at the Salzburg Mozarteum Summer Academy and Zephyr Chamber Music Festival. Chandler’s interest in cross genres and contemporary classical music led her to perform with Wild Up, a Los Angeles based grammy nominated ensemble, and to a few years later later premiere electronic chamber works in collaboration with the Sibelius Academy and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

She performs with the Arancia Quartet. They participated in the ARD and Fischoff Competitions and are semi finalists in the 2023 Mozart International Competition - read more about the ensemble here.

A believer in creating meaningful change, Chandler first set her entrepreneurial roots in 2017 when she joined the LA Phil’s first hackathon, working with engineers to devise proposals that escort classical music outside concert halls. Taking from this as inspiration, she and her then quartet colleagues at Rice University brought a musical program of Mozart and jazz into the greater Houston regions, reaching a kaleidoscope of communities. Through this, they were awarded the institution’s Richter Grant. Her desire to understand diverse groups and build cross cultural bridges brought her to work with the non-profit organizations Street Symphony and UN Women LA in 2018. She curated a series of grass roots chamber concerts in Skid Row and Chino Hills, showcasing female empowerment to promote gender equity awareness. Chandler went on to co-produce and premiere an experimental chamber opera based on Sylvia Townsend Warner’s feminist classic, Lolly Willowes. With her background in project management, she more recently joined forces with the Vilacello Musical Festival to expand upon resources and streamline operations, ensuring a successful second season for participants ranging from elementary school to college students.

Chandler is a graduate of the Colburn School and Rice University, studying under pedagogues Robert Lipsett and Paul Kantor. In addition to music, you can find her out on a run in the city, capturing photos, scribbling in her journal, or cozying up to a good book.
